Remembrance of Sun is a brief work for SAATB Chorus, set to the translated text of the same name by Soviet-era poet, Anna Akhmatova. In this text, vivid images of nature in the shifting of seasons are connected to the narrator in a deeply personal manner. Images of a dreary winter reflect the speaker's faint and fading memory of the feelings she once had for her husband-to-be.

The setting of this text is a vulnerable expression of our narrator’s contemplative state. Colorful folk-like harmonic practices are utilized to shape a sound world that feels intimately familiar while retaining a sense of mystery. The piano serves not as a traditional accompanist, but as a subtle source of harmonic color, offering sparse support to the exposed vocal lines. This work should feel spacious and able to ‘breathe.’ Written for advanced level high school singers, this is music that presents engaging challenges while bridging the gap between traditional choral repertoire familiar to students and contemporary music for chorus.
