Program Notes

Pocket Preludes is a collection of brief works for solo piano. The word ‘pocket’ points to two ideas in this music.

1. Each prelude is a brief musical statement, something small enough to carry with you.

2. Much of this music is inspired by jazz. In the jazz world, musicians often use the phrase ‘in the pocket,’ which refers to a sense of groove that is integral to the unmistakable character of the music. In order to properly portray the character of these preludes, one will need to play in the pocket!

This music does not have some deeper meaning in my mind. These pieces are simply music that I enjoyed writing, and music I certainly hope you enjoy hearing.
